Name:   Hugo Reyes
Nickname:   Hurley
Quote:   "That guy, he sees the future, dude."
Connections...
Hugo Reyes was raised with a tad bit of Spanish culture in California.   Like many of the other Losties, he had some family problems. His father left when he was very young and didn't return for 17 years, bringing the relationship between father and son far apart.   Nicknames "Hurley" for reasons we do not yet know, he got older and a bit larger in size.
At some point in history, he was on a boat or something with a deck.   It was only made to hold 8 people, but there were 23 people on it.   Hurley stepped on and the deck collapsed, killing and injuring a few people.   After this incident, Hurley was sent to the Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute (SRMHI) because he was emotional and suffering from some mental disease (unknown).   There, he made "friends" with a guy named Dave.   Hurley described him as the most normal guy in the place, but that was the problem.   It turned out that Dave was a figment of Hurley's imagination, and Hurley started seeing him on the island.   A while after finding out that his "normal" friend was fake, Hurley was released from SRMHI.
Starting a new life, he worked at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack, but had a rough time there. However, he made a new friend, and possibly more.   He occasionally visited SRMHI and tried to talk to the patients there.   One of them, Leonard Simms, always repeated these so called "random numbers":   4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42.   Hurley said that the numbers got stuck in his head and used them to play the lottery.   The most amazing part is that he won.   His reward was around 150 million, but all that glitters isn't gold.   Shortly after winning, he lost his friend because of lying to him, his grandfather died, a new house he bought burnt down, he was falsely arrested, his mother broke her ankle, a guy fell off of a building, and, of course, Flight 815 crashed.   It seemed that bad luck followed him everywhere, so he went to talk to Leonard about it.   Simms was still robotically repeating the numbers, and Hurley was trying to communicate.   After telling Leonard that he used the numbers to win the lottery, Simms snapped out of his crazy mind for a second and started yelling, "You opened the box!" (or something like that).   Hurley was frightened and convinced that he was cursed.   So, he flew to Australia to talk with a woman named Martha, the widow of a man named Sam Toomey, who used the numbers to win something.   She said that after Sam used the numbers, bad things happened.   She lost her leg in a car accident, and more things.   She said that the only way he could have stopped it was to die.   So, Sam killed himself.
I'm not sure why Hugo was on the plane, but the numbers followed him everywhere.   In the airport we could see a soccer team with the numbers on their jerseys, and on the island, more trouble stirred.   The Swan Hatch door had the numbers embedded on them.   Part of the computer system was to enter 4 8 15 16 23 42 into the DHARMA computer every 108 minutes (4+8+15+16+23+42=108!).   The injection used in many DHARMA locations had the numbers printed on the bottle.   And that is not all.   By entering the numbers are coordinates on Map Quest, we find that the coordinates lead to a place in the middle of the ocean between California and Australia.
But on the island, Hurley was a changed man.   He had found hope to act like a normal person.   When the Tailies came from the other side of the island, Hurley fell in love with a girl named Libby.   He could have sworn that he knew her, and he did.   She was a patient at the sanitarium at the same time he was there.   We find that she is in many flashbacks, but in different disguises such as different hair.   In SRMHI, she had brown hair.   In A Desmond flashback, she has short red hair. And on the island, she had long brown hair.   Of course, we may never know the answer to this because she was murdered by Michael before his quest to find Walt.
Hurley really makes the show go.   He is the hope in all of the survivors, and he always tries to create fun.   He even built a golf course.   In a newer episode, his luck turned and the curse was possibly broken.   Walt's dog appeared out of the jungle carrying a key chain with a lucky rabbit's foot and a car key.   Hurley followed Vincent through the jungle to an old overturned DHARMA Industries car.   He was determined to get the car running, but nobody believed in him.   However, he finally got it to work after hours of long work with Jin, Sawyer, and Charlie.   Oh yeah, they found beer in the car too.   Hurley came up with a plan to get it running.   Sawyer and Jin pushed the car down a steep hill to get the wheels moving.   Hurley at the wheel and Charlie at shotgun, they speeded toward jagged rocks.   At the last minute, Hurley built up hope and confidence and the car started.   Ever since then, his luck had improved.
