...Read the story of Enter-77 and everything that went on in this building...
The Flame Hatch was discovered and explained in Enter 77 (pronounced Enter Seven Seven!). The Hatch constists of a farm area, a living area, a computer room/office, and a hidden hatch. The episode starts when Kate, Sayid, Rousseau, and Locke discover the farm. As they approach, a man comes out. Thinking Sayid was a "Hostile", he shot him. Sayid was not killed though. The Losties explained where they were from and the man brought the group inside. Rousseau stayed out, and later left, while Kate, Locke, and Sayid went inside. There, they were treated with iced tea while the man told his story and healed Sayid.
You may recognize the man from the image on the screen in the Pearl. The man is Patchy, but his real name is Mikhail Bakunin and he is a former Soviet Soldier. He said that he was the last living member of the DHARMA Initiative, but we know that Desmond is alive, of course. Bakunin also speaks of people called "the Hostiles". Perhaps these people are the Others as he sees them. But we will find that out as we explore the hatch deeper.
As Sayid is cared for, Locke takes a look around the building. Soon, he discovers the office. Inside, there is an old computer with a game on it. Locke sits down and starts playing, but Mikhail explains that it is impossible to beat. He tells the Losties the the Flame is used for communicating to the outside world. John returns to the computer and eventually wins the game, when an image of "The Hatch Video Guy" pops up. It says to enter certain numbers to do certain things.
Meanwhile, Sayid dicovers a trap door underneath a rug. He calls Kate and Locke over, interrupting Locke's numbers. A nervous Mikhail attempts to explain and Sayid and Kate go into the basement area. Inside, the action kicks in and Ms. Klugh returns. Fighting breaks out and the Others (Mikhail AND Ms. Klugh) are captured by the Losties. Klugh manages to get free and Mikhail and her run outside. Both Others have a brief conversation in Russian, which is later translated to sometihng along the lines of Mikhail knowing what to do and it is the only choice. Then, in English, he apoligizes and shoots Ms. Klugh. She dies.
Back at the computer, Locke is told to enter "77" to communicate with the outside world. He does so and the building explodes. Yet another hatch destroyed by Locke... maybe Hurley's not the only one who has bad luck...
