Meet Charlie. He's someone who you can call "troubled". He's a recovering drug addict, or so he says, and he had plenty of family and financial issues. But, let's turn back time and take a look at the past. As a child, it seemed like his brother, Liam, was the favored child. One Christmas, Liam received tons of toys, while Charlie received a piano. If you add it up, it seems like a good deal, but one gift? Anyway, in his older years, he and his brother started a band called Driveshaft. They started out as underdogs, and sooned plowed up on top with their one and only song, "You All Everybody". (or at least I think that's the title... haha)
Everything was going well, but you can say that the band let fame get to their head, or at least Liam did. He started drinking, seeing multiple women, and doing drugs, and like many siblings, Charlie followed in Liam's footsteps. Liam married and had a daughter, Megan, named after their mother, and decided to clean up his act, but Charlie was just grudging down. And like the best cowboys have daddy issues, they have brother issues as well. Charlie became an addict, and that was that.
He and his brother stayed out of contact for a while, and at some point in time, Charlie got on flight 815 after a long night with a girl who we now know was an Other. And that's when he crashed. Charlie's the kind everyone loved at first, but people started getting word that he was a drug addict and turned on him. He spent a lot of time with Claire Littleton, and perhaps he's fallen in love with her. Of course, Charlie started acting weirder and weirder.
When the other plane was found on a cliff in the jungle, Charlie found Virgin Mary statues loaded with heroin. So much for recovering addict, because Charlie immediately snatched a few statues. Locke found out and made Charlie get rid of it, not knowing that he could always get more. He started telling people that Claire's baby, Aaron, was in danger. He also would have dreams and wake up with Aaron in his arms, strongly frightening Claire. At this point, not only the other survivors had turned on him, but Locke and Claire did too. Soon, he decided to burn the plane with Mr. Eko and threw his stash into the ocean.
Now, Charlie faces a new problem. According to the now future-seeing Desmond, Charlie is going to die, and soon. "No matter what you do, you can't stop it! You're gonna die Charlie." (Desmond) Soon, Hurley just tells Charlie to get up off his butt, and stop moping around. It seems that as Hurley broke his "curse", Charlie may have broken death.
"Everything That I Am"
From Disney's Tarzan On Broadway
Phil Collins Pop Version
I chose this song because I think it represents Charlie's struggle to generally belong. When he got on the island, many stayed away from him or turned on him because of his drug abuse. Not only that, but he started to remember his family and his mother, and some bad memories from his childhood, which I think is represented in the second verse, about his family. In the bridge, it really makes sense beacause everyone has found something on the island. Whether it was seeing his mother (as an angel) or dreaming about the piano, it was so real to him. Then he realizes, hey, I've changed. And he had. On the island, Charlie Pace was no longer Charlie Pace, he was the changed, and good Charlie Pace.
VERSE 1
Is this my past here before me
Is this my story unfolding?
It’s all here to discover
Everything that I am
Can this be what I’ve been seeking?
All my life I’ve been waiting for this
And now these memories
Will they make me see more?
CHORUS
Ooh I want to know where I belong
I want to know where I came from
I want to know the reason why I’m here
The way I am
Feeling the things I feel
VERSE 2
Is this my family?
Can it really be them that I see?
My father and mother
And in their arms can it really be me
All these emotions
I can barely control
Cause the family I had
Is not the family I know?
CHORUS
BRIDGE
These spirits calling me
Familiar voices haunting
Disappearing taunting me
This is the choice I must make
REVISED CHORUS
Cause I know where I belong
I know where I, I came from
I know the reason why
I must decide
And leave here
The man I am inside
The future is clear for me to see
To be the man I’m meant to be
Like my father with my head up high
Standing tall
And proud of all
That I am
I'm a man
Angel Rays
I chose this picture to describe Charlie because it represents his coming out from depression, drug abuse, and all of the horrible things that burdened him. The dark clouds represent all the bad things, then peeking out is a small ray of light. (Sometimes called "angel rays") The light could represent whatever brought him out of this bad state, whether it be The Island, Locke, new friends, Mr. Eko, anyone or anything. Depends on how you interpret it.
